Springfield firefighters respond to working house fire on Georgetown Street
Posted On: Feb 09, 2012

SPRINGFIELD – A fire displaced three adults and a child from their East Springfield neighborhood home early Thursday afternoon.

The fire at 45 Georgetown St. broke out shortly before 12:45 p.m. and the occupants of the home escaped injury.

Fire Department spokesman Dennis G. Leger said the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad continues to probe the cause of the fire. The bulk of the fire damage was in a rear bedroom.

The owner of the property, Moses Matos said he believes some kind of electrical problem sparked the blaze. He said he was cooking in the kitchen when he “heard noises, like a pop,” coming from the bedroom.

Matos said he went into the bedroom and saw that the mattress was in flames.

His daughter, Roslynn Gonzalez, said her father unsuccessfully attempted to extinguish the blaze and then called the Fire Department.

Matos said he has lived in the home for about nine years.

Leger estimated damage at about $7,500 and said that the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting those displaced.
