A single-family home on White Street in Springfield was heavily damaged after it was struck by lightning as a string of thunderstorms passed through the area Sunday night.

All four members of the family living in the 523 White St. home were able to escape unharmed, they said.

Family members said they heard a loud crash just before 8:30 p.m. and immediately lost power. They realized the brick one-and-a-half story building had been struck and evacuated. First responders reported seeing flames coming from the roof of the home.

Firefighters battled the fire in the roof structure of the house as well as torrential downpours which made moving about the fire scene on rain-slicked surfaces difficult.

The structure fire was one of several calls firefighters fielded caused by the storms, including a reported tree fire on Longhill Street following a probably lightning strike.

Approximately 300 Eversource customers lost power in the Ludlow area after storms passed through northeaster Hampden and southeaster Hampshire counties earlier.

There were reports of tree and wind damage in the Athol/Orange area as well.
