Two Springfield residents were forced from their home after fire broke out in the attic area of a single-family home at 94 Treetop Ave. Sunday evening.

Springfield Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Drew Piemonte said the fire broke out at approximately 6:40 p.m. in the attic of the wood-framed, ranch-style home. The occupants were able to evacuate the home when smoke detectors sounded.

Firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly but, so far, have not determined what caused the initial ignition. The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad is investigating.

Piemonte said the people living in the home refused assistance from the Red Cross.
