Fire in Springfield’s McKnight neighborhood displaces 4; causes major damage to 100-year-old home

SPRINGFIELD - A fire Thursday afternoon on Princeton Street in the city’s historic McKnight neighborhood displaced 4 residents and caused heavy damage to a 100-year-old colonial home.

All of the residents of the home at 169 Princeton St. got out safely, said fire department spokesman Capt. Drew Piemonte. The Western Massachusetts chapter of the American Red Cross has been called in to assist.

One firefighter received minor injuries while fighting the fire, he said.

The fire likely started on the second floor and spread to the attic and roof.

The upper floors sustained heavy fire and smoke damage, while the first floor received extensive water damage. Firefighters also cut holes through the roof to allow smoke to ventilate.

Piemonte said the damage likely will result in the home being declared a total loss.

The fire was reported at about 12:15 p.m. after calls were made to 911. The first firefighters arriving reported heavy smoke coming out the roof.

With heavy smoke pouring out the windows and roof, the order was given for all firefighters to get out of the building, as firefighters began an external attack.

According to city records, the home, a single-family colonial, is owned by Foster White Jr.

City records say it was constructed in 1913 and has a total assessed value of $140,000.

A woman who was pointed out as a resident of the property declined to comment.

Princeton Street is off St. James Avenue, and runs between St. James and Cornell Street.

St. James was closed to traffic to allow emergency vehicles access, and traffic was diverted down Monmouth and Harvard streets.
